Digital media in arts education
Two approaches of media arts education at school and university are introduced and discussed. Examples of education and software will be presented visually (via data projector). Rather than single presentations, we suggest a workshop character of thinking processes initiated by visual media and discussion. Emotional Technology Design Through Storytelling in Mixed Reality Scenarios Inspired by Media Arts (Daniela Reimann) The German school system, historically developed to meet the needs of industrialism, is currently facing an overall crisis. The labour market requires creative, mobile and flexible employees who not only adapt to the changing needs of qualifications as well as to new job profiles. Staff is expected to bring in creative ideas and strategies for the companies’ benefit to compete on the global market. The latter is a big issue for pupils of lower secondary school level in terms of accessing the future labour market. However, such creative abilities are not addressed or mediated explicitly at public school level – pupils rather seem to get educated out of their creativity for a variety of reasons related to the didactics and methodology in practice in the overall learning culture still mainly coined by the 19th century approach. The latter hampers creative processes especially in the framework of introducing digital media in arts education. The approach of an education through arts in all subjects integrating the arts across the curriculum for interdisciplinary learning scenarios is opening up a variety of opportunities. The subject of arts at school is challenged to provide artistic design and shaping processes for all kids on all levels. The paper argues for the introduction of so called emotional technology design strategies, a didactic concept developed in the context of education scenarios at the UNESCO project school realised in the research project MediaArtLab@School at the University of Flensburg (Prof. Dr. Manfred Blohm, Dr. Daniela Reimann). From 2004-2006 it was funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research Planning and the Land Schleswig-Holstein. It integrated the pupils’ ideas in scenarios realised through project- and team-based arrangements in Mixed Reality environments. The latter were inspired by contemporary media art, which brings together a variety of disciplines and serves as a model for learning through arts. The design of complex interaction spaces for learning can be shaped best by the pupils themselves: They invented, developed, shaped, transformed, programmed, constructed and presented the digital media embedded in artistic design processes and traditional materials. The developments of prototypes, such as interactive systems, self made robotic toys, or Mixed Reality games were used as didactic strategies to make the pupils find their medium and experience their creative abilities. In the visual presentation of the paper, the research and didactic model as well as examples of its application at school and university will be introduced. Using Multimedia Processes, Through Arts, Sciences, and Technology, for Educators (Pierre Pepin) As an educator at the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, my students come from different cultural backgrounds. Most of them are American but many also come from Latin Countries such as Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, Porto-Rico…. This multicultural environment reoriented my strategies and approaches to teaching sciences, multimedia, and technology through art. For the last fifteen years, my teaching goals have been to experience different avenues on how a multimedia process could help to develop a new level of creativity by integrating the use of sciences and technology. Teachers should communicate and preserve basic knowledge about the traditional approaches to art, while strategically facilitating the hybrid approach, which is the combination of traditional and technological components, within the classroom on a daily basis. The direction of my research points towards a new vision of globalization.
