A Facelift for Defacement: Graffiti as New Media
This paper defines graffiti and new media and then analyzes the transformation of graffiti from a covert subcultural communication art form into a new media object. Three new media graffiti categories as well as their associated objects are illustrated. Each category of graffiti is defined and analyzed as new media according to Manovich's principles of new media. The paper concludes with the comparisons of all three categories of new media graffiti and traditional graffiti, exploring their interrelations as art forms and as subjects of study for the social reconstructive art classroom.
