|Children’s drawing process from memory: a trans-cultural study between France and Brazil
|This paper presents two major studies concerning the differences and similarities in the drawing process from memory. The first study describes the drawing processes of Brazilian children (participants from four schools with different social backgrounds and educational approaches in Recife, Brazil). The second study presents the result of the process of drawing of French children, collected by Bernard Darras (participants from a school in Paris). Both studies investigate the presence of commonalities of the use of graphic components of five objects (pineapple, typewriter, tea pot, telephone and star fish) by children aged 5 to 12 years old, exploring what (the frequency study) and how (the sequence study) children draw. Coutinho’s (1998, 2003) research protocols were used in both experiments. The research method is of a descriptive nature; data were collected by video recording from within the school environment and examined qualitatively and quantitatively according to Coutinho’s (1998) analytical model. The study hypothesis is that regardless of age, gender, the language spoken, teacher’s instructions, educational approach and the characteristics of the object there are commonalities in the drawing process from memory; this hypothesis is tested under a trans-cultural observation which compares the French and Brazilian children’s drawings performances. The drawing process is not a linear sequencing of actions, although some commonalities were found in the order of what was represented and how it was represented in all drawing situations.
