|Visual communities: re-thinking curriculum based on visual culture interests
|Because visual culture shapes the construction of self and others, it supports the construction of categories concerning attitudes and beliefs. Many researchers and theorists have discussed visual culture in terms of its influence on the construction of, for example, adolescent gender or racial identities. These discussions have often emphasized negative psychological influences of visual culture that create exclusive identities built on and bounded by sexist or racist individual and group beliefs and behaviors. But, what about the effect of visual culture to support inclusion in adolescent communities, such as communities tied to leisure activities, hobbies, and other social interests?
This presentation will focus on a grant-supported research project done in the US and in Hong Kong about the visual community associations of adolescent and young adult students. It will address questions concerning changes in art curriculum development based on self-education and visual culture in both heritage communities and interest communities.
