Let's make small fish
“Let’s make small fish” is an interactive Software, based on the media artwork “Small fish” produced at the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany. With this software both children and adults can interactively develop a dramaturgy of images in real time and compose at the same time. “Let’s make small fish” provides users the opportunity to create their own interactive artwork without knowledge of programming. The use of it is playfully simple and doesn’t require complex technical equipment. It can be used in groups or alone. An additional DVD is currently produced at the ZKM and will be released at the end of Mai 2007. It includes, amongst other features, a workshop book describing numerous users’ experiences and which is supposed to inspire new users. The software has been tested for quite a while in Asia and Europe. Participating Institutes: 1. Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (Japan) 2. Center for Art and Media, Institute for Music and Acoustics (Karlsruhe) The Software has been tested with different target groups at the ZKM ranging from children from the age of six, teenagers, adults, musicians, to artists, teachers of art and music and even to deaf people. The DVD “Let’s make small fish” intertwines art and music as well as analogue and digital applications. The users create visual tableaus on the monitor and assign different sounds to the images. The images can be downloaded from the Internet or be designed according to individual taste (painting, drawing, photography). The same applies for the sounds, which can either be genuinely generated or downloaded. By moving the images around on screen with the mouse sounds and tones are generated in real time, which then can be used compositionally. The software can be both used in short and long term projects ranging from one day only to up to a week. In education, it can be used in museums and both in arts and music classes in school, allowing an interdisciplinary learning and also in universities.
