|The school as a space to the sensitive looking: secrets of the heart
|This assignment gives an account of an educational building experience of a space to the affection, where we’ve could manage defeats, where we’ve cultivated secrets, dreams and wishes. A place where was possible, by the artistic activity, building a sensitive looking to the stories of each one, to the collective memory.
This experience has came true with children at the ages of seven to ten years, at an Elementary School, in the city of Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, in Brazil. During the art classes, we’ve tacked our stories with the threads of the aesthetic experience, crossing references of African and Indian cultures with the tradition of the women who makes the embroidery and who weaves their story of life with threads and cloths. In this experience we’ve looked for a dialogue between the objectivity and subjectivity of the schoolchildren, working in tune with a contemporary dimension of the art education.
From the African references, we’ve came the tailor of “patuás”, symbols of luck and protection. In the Indian tradition, we’ve founded the Quarup ritual, in which we’ve learned managing our defeats. We have used this Indian ritual as reference, painting a tree-trunk where drawings and texts went hung.
So, we’ve created in the school a reception’s place to welcome individualities and subjectivities of each one. Besides, work with the African and Indian cultures means incorporating and giving a new significance to our practical in classroom, turning these cultures alive to the schoolchildren and for us, the teachers.
