Background knowledge in art
This presentation discusses what background knowledge is in art, how it is represented in the United States Art Education National Standards, how it compares with background knowledge in other academic areas, how we use it to help students achieve in art, and more importantly retain a life long interest in this field as adults. Knowledge in any field represents itself through vocabulary. This ability to be able to discuss and write about art using the vocabulary of art may be an indication of student success in the art classroom. The ability to be able to use vocabulary in talking or thinking about art as an adult may also help with life long interest in adults. The use of vocabulary and its effect on students is noted in some research on concept formation, use of discussion in the classrooms, and in a case study of an art department.
